How important is cybersecurity?

Today we live in a world where interconnection is part of the backbone of society. In this context, cybersecurity has established itself as a fundamental pillar for the protection and peace of mind of individuals, companies and governments in the face of increasingly sophisticated virtual threats. Here, its role transcends the limits of technology and becomes a crucial element for the execution of multiple activities in modern society.

The variability and impact of cybercrime in recent years has been a constant concern, not only for individuals, but also for companies. And this is not minor. According to the National Cybersecurity Survey conducted in 2023 by the Center for Information Technology Studies of the Catholic University of Chile, “cybersecurity incidents increased by an average of 31.6% over the past year. In addition, the Cybersecurity Management Benchmark 2021 (part of the ENCI) established that 62% of organizations already indicated that prevention was the number one priority for investment in information security” (Emol).

Ransomware, malware, phishing and other malicious techniques have evolved into more advanced forms, causing economic losses, breach of confidential information and loss of credibility in systems that should facilitate our daily lives. Yes, it looks like a Netflix movie, but the reality that many of us see is more complex than a TV series. But there is no need to panic, there is a solution for everything.

Cybersecurity as an ally

Addressing the cybersecurity challenge involves a response in more than one aspect. Collaboration between public and private sectors, investment in research and development, implementation of effective regulations and public awareness are key elements to strengthen resilience against these threats. In addition, education, as in all aspects, is important, because the earlier we know about the vulnerability of the system, the sooner we will be able to find the appropriate responses.

Creating security policies and standards, fostering a cybersecurity-focused organizational culture, and developing capabilities to detect, prevent and respond to incidents are essential in defending against increasingly sophisticated cyberattacks.

On the other hand, the early adoption of technologies that help maintain the trust of users and organizations, such as the use of data encryption services (end-to-end encryption), biometric verification for processes or the use of double validation methods (OTP: One Time Passwords), are part of a successful parallel race where organizations and companies are empowered in the face of these threats.

The future of cybersecurity

Technology never stops advancing for a minute and cybersecurity is positioned as a constantly evolving challenge. Artificial intelligence, the Internet of Things (IoT), cloud services and other technological advances offer significant benefits, but also require new methods and best practices of use, demanding innovative and adaptive solutions.

As an example, the concept of one-time passwords has changed over time. We have gone from the first generation of physical tokens to sending encrypted messages that are self-deleting once visible, even integrating directly into the user’s target application, streamlining previously manual processes.
